In this book I talk about the private violin lessons I have given to children with intellectual and learning disabilities.
I taught these children over roughly a decade, beginning when I was in my mid-twenties, on Saturdays, my day off. I had eight students during that time. I had only eight because I needed a full day a week for these lessons, which for most children, I gave at their homes.
Of these eight children, I chose to share the stories of three of them. The first is a boy with Down syndrome, the second is a young autistic man with an intellectual disability, and the third is a girl with a learning disability.
I studied law at university and have never studied either music or education formally. I work as a psychiatric social worker at a group home for people with mental illness. As a result, my job also has no direct connection to children with special needs. So while this book will not be a model textbook on how to teach these children, I hope it serves to document how these lessons can be taught. In short, this book introduces to the reader the lessons that I gave, in a style I hope you can read with ease.
I hope that this book reaches parents of children with special needs, people interested in music activities within their communities, and teachers of violin, piano, or other instruments.
I would be especially happy if this book brings someone to enjoy music.
Although the title mentions both intellectual and learning disabilities, the girl with a learning disability appears in only a tenth of the book. In fact, this book mainly focuses on the lessons I gave to two people with intellectual disabilities.
The name of the last girl is fictitious. With the exception of her name, every story in this book is true.
